The share of bioenergy to cover our energy needs will increase significantly in the future as the revised Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources (Directive (EU) 2018/2001 – RED II) outlines.
In order to ensure that biomass is produced sustainably, EU Member States have agreed on criteria that must be observed and documented by operators for the production of electricity and heat from biomass or biogas.
Voluntary certification systems such as SURE are regarded as a legal way of documenting compliance with the RED II criteria. Certifying the sustainability of biomass guarantees high quality and transparency. Schemes that certify sustainable products must be audited and approved by the EU Commission to ensure full compliance with the RED II requirements.
SURE was established in order to obtain this EUrecognition and the scheme offers a feasible system that demonstrates compliance with the requirements of RED II in a transparent, reliable and legally secure manner.
