With the implementation of the EU Directive, the use of biomass for the production of electricity and heat will increase significantly. In order to ensure the sustainability of biomass use, the member states of the EU have agreed on standards which in future must be observed and documented by operators of biomass cogeneration plants or biogas plants in order to continue the eligibility for funding.
Voluntary certification systems, such as SURE, are regarded as an impartial and reliable way of documenting compliance with the RED II criteria. In order to meet the requirements of RED II and to ensure the high quality and transparency of sustainability certification, the SURE system is regularly audited and formally recognised by the EU Commission.
The SURE-System was established to obtain this recognition and to offer a solution to operators in the biomass and biogas market to safely and reliably demonstrate the requirements of RED II.
