The BLE provides information
In its 23rd Nabisy information letter, the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) announced that new biomass codes have been made available for the generation of electricity from biogas or biomethane. With these new biomass codes, the BLE has made it possible to issue sustainability certificates for electricity generated from biogas or biomethane derived from the co-digestion of sustainable substrates. The new biomass codes now simplify GHG documentation and are intended to reduce the administrative burden.
The background to the introduction of the new biomass codes lies in the greenhouse gas calculation requirements set out in the revised Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED III). In the case of co-digestion, this directive stipulates the calculation of an average value that takes into account all sustainable substrates used for biogas production. As the BLE’s previous list of biomass codes contained only substrate-specific codes, it was not possible in the past to issue sustainability certificates that would have required the specification of multiple substrates due to the use of an average value.
In the letter, the BLE also stated that the provisions set out in the 16th Information Letter of 22 February 2024 and the 18th Information Letter of 7 June 2024 regarding the fuel sector remain unaffected.
Please refer to the BLE’s 23rd information letter for further details and the procedure for issuing a sustainability certificate for electricity generated from biogas or biomethane produced from sustainable co-digested substrates.
